When I was growing up, some of my best friends were dirt bikes(bicycles). My dirt bikes gave me freedom to roam around and explore; sometimes, I had to be a bit of a dare devil by jumping ramps and wrecking every now and then. It was so fun I rode almost every day until sundown.
I still remember my very first bike: it was green and had training wheels on it because I was really young. I spent a lot of time on my first bike probably because I loved it! So, when it came time to get my next bike, I was definitely ready.
I was at Grandma Betty’s house as she used to keep me a lot, and I think it was my fifth birthday. I just recall Mama being there and Pop driving up, and he got out of the car with a big grin on his face; Pop then proceeded to reach in the vehicle and he pulled out a new bike, and I could feel my eyes light up because it was awesome! The bike was green and had a blue sparkly banana seat, a bell on the handle bars, and slick lettered tires; it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen.
I could not believe the bike was mine. I believe the bike had training wheels, but Pop took them off, and I got on and down the road I went as happy as I could be. As you can probably tell, I will never forget that moment; it was the coolest bike I ever had.
I believe the next bike I had was when my brothers and I got Evel Knievel dirt bikes for Christmas, and we fought over which bike we liked because they were alike yet different; Merry Christmas! We loved our new dirt bikes, as we used to watch Evel Knievel on TV a lot, so that was an added bonus.
My next bike was a Huffy; it was black, yellow and orange, and it had a plate on the front of the handle bars. All I can say is my parents had good taste in bicycles since I loved everything about it. Unfortunately, that was the bike I was riding when I was hit by a green LTD; the dirt bike was totaled and I cried.
The next bike I got was actually a Washington Redskins bike, and Chad got a Dallas Cowboys bike, and Craig got a yellow Ten-Speed again all at Christmas. Obviously Washington was my favorite NFL team back then, and Daryl Green was my favorite player for Washington: he was the fastest player in the NFL. Green was number 28, and that is the number I put on the plate on the front of the handle bars.
Well those are the dirt bikes I remember of a fortunate and amazing childhood. Between winning bike races at school on Mayday Playday, getting hit by a car, riding for the first time without training wheels, and life lessons, I will never forget those memories and the friends I made along the way. It was simply put: a dirt bike life!
Take care and God bless!
Chris
